Garbage Collection

by Mike Manes, W5VSI

Marty Griffin, WA0GEH, dropped off the EOSS-133 'chute and beacons Sat afternoon.

The 'chute was in great shape after I opened it up, but I did find the greatest mass of shards that we've ever brought back since using the fast release - a massive 2.5 grams!

I've posted a photo of the shards that were bound up in the shroud lines, and the biggest one was wrapped up in the riser - over 20 ft below the bursting balloon. This gives one an idea of how violent the burst is in that it can toss rubber down that far! And if those shards had stayed attached to the rest of the balloon, then we coulda had a real mess on recovery.
