EOSS-205/206 Fun Flights, March 14, 2015 - Recap

The EOSS Fun Flight was a success for our three STEM payloads and one club member payload, and a trying day for our beacon builders. Work continues on getting the new beacons into flight-ready conditions.

EOSS-205 AND 206 launched from Deer Trail at 0720 and 0732. Both balloons flew south and landed near Rush, Colorado (yes, it does have a Post Office). Student payloads were all a success and EOSS gained valuable experience with our new beacons.

Our STEM programs have generated some press coverage, promoting the good work the students did. See coverage of the NSSTI Pongsat program here, and the Montclair School fo Academics and Enrichment 4th Grade science project here.

Original Announcement:

The EOSS Fun Flight is now two 1600g balloons. We will be carrying three STEM program payloads and flight qualifying three new EOSS beacons.

  • Montclair School of Academics and Enrichment in Denver will be flying a 4th grade-designed payload with cockroach and tardigrade astronauts on board.
  • National Space Science & Technology Institute in Colorado Springs will be flying 50 pongsats built by middle and high school students.
  • A Standley Lake High School Earth Sciences project will be flying a radiation sensor experiment.

EOSS will be flight qualifying two beacons built by NØIX and two built by KØSCC. KCØRPS will be flying an experiment with two Geiger counters on board.

UPDATED PREDICTION

Click here for the Fligthpath Prediction. If you look at the current prediction under EOSS-205, Click on the "GIF" link for the most recent initialization date and time, the prediction takes the balloon down into DIA airspace. Look for the link that says "Predictions for alternate sites" and look at the EOSS-205 prediciton for Deer Trail. This looks like the best bet. The prediction will update every 24 hours.
